Description
Lacton tablet contains two very effective and well-known ingredients. Silybum marianum (milk thistle) is a native plant of the Mediterranean area. The main active component of S. marianum extract is silymarin which seems to have a remarkable galactagogue effect, improving the average milk production. The positive effect of silymarin has been associated with significant increases of prolactin levels.
Galega officinalis (goat’s rue), a leguminous native to near East and widely used in Europe, is a traditional galactogogue. A dedicated study has confirmed an increased production of milk associated with a moderate raising of estrogen level, when silymarin is included in the diet.
The food supplement is based on the association of milk thistle (Silybum marianum) and Galega officinalis, for improving moms’ physiologic production of milk during breastfeeding.
Bibliographic references confirmed the role of Silymarin as a safe and effective herbal product that can be orally administered in order to improve daily milk production in healthy women after delivery, without affecting the main milk biochemical characteristics.
Very recently the effectiveness of the extracts of Galega officinalis has been accepted by the Italian Ministry of Health, which has formalized its role as a milk-production enhancer.
During the lactation period, the breast glands synthesize the components of milk partly by concentrating blood lipidic constituents, partly by synthesizing ex novo milk proteins, such as casein, lacto-globulins, and lacto-albumin from plasmatic protides and sugars such as lactose from serum glucose. The amount of milk secreted, as well as milk composition, is strictly linked to the lactation period.
The total absence of milk secretion (agalactia) is an event occurring very rarely, while it is more common especially in the primiparae, a more or less pronounced shortage of secretion in the first week of puerperium (hypogalactia).
The women in the puerperal stage who produce less than 280 grams of milk in the 24 hours on the fifth day postpartum are considered hypogalactia (primary hypogalactia). Secondary hypogalactia can depend on defects in the production/ secretion, or on retards in lactogenesis, but such impairment in lactation can also be a consequence of neuro-humoral and psychological stress conditions. Independently of the cause, no effective pharmacologic therapies or natural remedies are currently known to counteract hypogalactia in an effective way. The combination of milk thistle and galega has been studied to overcome this problem and developed as Lacton
